Desktop as a Service (DaaS) and

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

Cloud Desktop and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure enable Secure Remote Access to Desktop applications from any device – PC, MAC, Tablet and Phone

What is Desktop as a Service?

Cloud Desktop or Desktop as a Service (DaaS) is a Cloud-based PC desktop environment giving users access to applications and data running on a Cloud Server accessed securely over the Internet from various devices such as PCs, Notebooks, MACs and Mobile devices. Unlike a PC or Notebook, the Cloud Desktop’s specification can be dynamically adjusted to meet user or Application needs. Applications are installed centrally on the Server and Data resides on the Secure Server (or other Secure Storage) i.e. not the user’s PC. In addition to providing a full desktop in the Cloud, the system can deliver applications directly to users’ PCs or suitable devices.

VDI, or Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, is a generic term that describes cloud server-based desktops. It can encompass a single deployment, multiple individual desktops, or an entire network, including servers accessing shared data. The technology is available from Microsoft as per Link, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and others.

Depending on the use case, leveraging Cloud Desktops/Virtual Desktop Infrastructure can breathe new life into ageing technology and enable organisations to benefit from the latest advancements.

Long Term Benefits of Cloud Desktop and VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure)

Provide flexibility to employees: A Cloud Virtual Desktop will enable your employees to connect quickly and securely, regardless of the location. They can access their virtualised desktop from their favourite qualified devices, including PCs, Macs, and mobile devices such as tablets and phones. You can optimise employee profiles to offer applications tailored to individual users or roles.

Application Delivery: For PC users individual applications can be delivered directly to the user’s Remote PC – not the full desktop. The application behaves as if it is running on their local PC.

Optimise IT costs/management: Multiple concurrent sessions can maximise benefits and optimise costs depending on the type of use.

Enforce a Zero Trust model: Cloud Virtual Desktop secures sensitive information in the cloud, and entry points are protected by user authentication. Your Data and Files are not EVERYWHERE, data is centralised.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD): Companies that use contractors can give users access to data and programs without handing over a Computer and Data ie. PC or a Notebook. Important if contractor works for multiple organisations as applications and data is stored on a Central Cloud PC or Server and not on the Contractor’s notebook or pc. Contractor can use their own PC, Notebook or MAC.

Similarly employees can access Applications and Data from their own Home PC without worrying about Security or additional licensing consideration.

Aging technology: Because the Applications run on Cloud Servers you can make use of older devices rather than buying latest PC or Notebook.

Boundaries of IT and Cloud are fading

The boundaries of IT and Cloud are rapidly dissolving as technology becomes indispensable for business operations and employee productivity. Outdated legacy systems must make way for solutions that meet evolving customer expectations and cater to a dynamic workforce. Companies and IT teams grapple with the proliferation of technology options, including Big Data, Analytics, IoT, AI, Virtual Reality, Cloud, and Everything as a Service. The role of IT is undergoing a profound transformation. To thrive in the modern workplace, Companies and IT professionals must address new challenges, from cybersecurity threats to fostering employee tech adoption. Adapting to these changes is crucial for staying ahead in today’s tech-driven landscape.

Depending on the use case, leveraging Cloud Desktops/Virtual Desktop Infrastructure can breathe new life into ageing technology and enable organisations to benefit from the latest advancements. Since Cloud Desktop / VDI is Server based technology in the Cloud, an old PC or Notebook can now “run” / access new applications. There is also benefit from a Centralised deployment which is much easier to deploy, manage and maintain.

If you are struggling with large volumes of files with SharePoint, you may be interested in Cloud Drive designed to deliver Cloud based traditional Files Shares to remote workers over the Internet. Users are already familiar with local C-drive or Server based  S-drive (or other drive letter). Cloud Drive includes bells and whilstles you may be already used to with SharePoint, like version control, user controlled sharing and access control, both company (and external users if policy allows).
